Bad Words

I would like to know who made up bad words and what was the point?  To annoy parents?  We went through a big stage a couple years ago when the boys started school and started hearing that there were “bad words” out there that they were not supposed to say.  We started hearing things like, “I know what the “s” word is or I know what the “d” word is”.  Blake would come home, not to be outdone and say, “I know what the “J” word is.”  But as they get older of course it gets more complicated.  Austin came home the other day and asked if there was an “n” word.  I told him yes.  He asked if it was worse than the “f” word.  I said that in my opinion it was worse because it was hurtful and disrespectful and just well WRONG.
Fast forward to yesterday.  The boys were on the trampoline, and got into a fight.  One landed on the other one and the other one pushed him off, and so on it goes until they are hitting each other and whipping each others shoes way out into the ground cover.  Blake comes in crying, Austin smashed his arm.  I get a little fed up with the rough housing that turns out wrong- it’s the price they pay as far as I am concerned.  Unless there is blood, I tend to blow it off.  But Austin stomps in all mad because Blake told on him and he tells me that Blake did something bad the other day.  I wasn’t sure I wanted to know what it was.  I asked if he hurt someone, no.  SO he finally tells me that he wrote something bad on a piece of paper.  I told him that I didn’t think it was wise for him to rat out his brother but that just made him want to tell me more.  So he said, “Blake wrote “Let me tell you a story about that damn bus 87″ on a piece of paper.”  I stared at him for a minute trying to keep a straight face.  I have no idea why Blake would write that.  The only thing that comes to mind is that last year while walking home from school they saw bus 87 run over and kill my neighbors Golden Retriever.  But still…..
As I sat there trying to figure out what to say, Austin got more mad and said, “So it’s ok if I go around saying bad words too???”  At which point he started saying the “d” word over and over and then Cole joined in saying it too but he actually said “bam bam bam” because he didn’t get it.

Let me just add that I was trying to get everyone ready for LAX practice, which is always a crazy time trying to find pads, cleats, sticks….

Blake went to his room and hid.  I told him that he can’t write the “d” word any more but he already knew that.

We all had another chat about bad words and by that time my head hurt. We also had a little chat about ratting out ones brother over stupid things.  Then I pushed them all out the door because Andy actually got home in time to take them to practice and I enjoyed an hour of quiet which are few and far between!  Well quiet except for the hum of my sewing machine.

But the good news is today is Friday and it is going to be a warm warm sunny weekend.  Got lots of soccer games and LAX games, maybe a cookout or two, flower planting, and the best news- the architect is coming to finalize front porch plans.  YIPPEE!

I can sooo relate. We are going through something similar at my house right now. But it’s not words, it’s fingers. Ever since my oldest son told my youngest the “middle finger is BAD” he walks around talking about what he can do with his middle finger. Holding it at a 90 degree angle vs. the 180 straight up. BOYS….that’s all I can say…he isn’t technically doing anything wrong since he isn’t sticking it up but he talks about it all the time.
