Photography

I have loved photography almost my whole life. But it wasn’t until high school when I really started to take it seriously. I joined the yearbook staff in order to spend as much time as possible in the dark room- I loved every minute of it.

When I went to college at The University of Texas I took every photography class they offered. It was a weird education of right and wrong. They tried to focus on the creative yet there were always “right and wrong” ways to do things.

Now that I am able to do things the way I want (ie no rules) I have gone back and forth with the what I want to do with my love of photography. When Andy and I bought our first house, an old 1920’s house in Columbus, it came with a built-in dark room in the basement. I couldn’t believe my luck. The house was previously owned by a photographer for the Columbus Dispatch. I thought I was the luckiest girl in the world. Until I had my first kid and couldn’t spend any time down there.

Shortly after that digital photography emerged and I found my new heaven.

That said, it has always been a hobby. Until I started attending a lot of Blue Jackets game with my camera in tow.

After uploading a bunch of my pictures to flickr, I got multiple emails from hockey bloggers asking to use my pictures. I didn’t think much of it until someone suggested I get a press pass in order to get my better lens into games and get access to the holes cut into the glass to get better shots.

I was pretty excited about it so I emailed a couple well known hockey blog that said- yep, just let us know when you want to go.

Oh and by the way, how old are you? We need your age to get you into the locker room.

And that’s when I started to rethink things. See I have never been into pro sports before. I somehow got sucked into hockey and I am not sure exactly how it happened. When I was living in Michigan I had a good friend that was dating a guy that played hockey for Michigan State. I attended a lot of games with her, met a lot of the team. Hung out with them when she would go out with her boyfriend. But never really got into the sport.

But then I moved to Texas where hockey just wasn’t that big. When we moved north Andy started to really get into hockey. It took me a few years to warm up to it. I was trying to figure out what drew me in and I think the biggest part is the fact that these guys play with so much heart and passion. It is a fun game to watch.

So they question became, do I really want to attend games only to sit down at the ice, shooting the whole game? Do I want to be in the dressing room with a bunch of half naked guys? Yeah, I know- all my girlfriends were like, “are you kidding me?? get tons of pics of #97 for me!!”

So I have waited and thought about it. It’s been a few months. And now I am wondering if it is time. Time to break out and have some fun with this hobby of mine. Maybe not so much in the dressing room…. although why not? It’s only fair- my husband works for Victoria’s Secret you know. 🙂

    Hi!

I have to say that your blog and site are freaking gorgeous! 🙂 This will def. be bookmarked.

I was wondering, could you make a post about what what camera/lenses you use and the techniques to make pictures look as perfect as your’s?

I have a Nikon D40x and I’m ashamed to say I’ve been using it as a point and shoot camera. :/ It has so much “coolness” to it, but I just don’t know where to begin.

    How exciting. 🙂
My son loves the Blue Jackets!!! His birthday is in April and we have considered taking him to his first game for his b-day. How far into April do they play?
