Thursday on Wednesday

Tomorrow morning I have a yearbook meeting at the school, plus Kindergarten classroom volunteering so I am writing my blog post the night before. I am watching a hockey game, kids are in bed but not asleep. Let’s see how it goes.

Today was a crazy day of weird weather, started warm and sunny, ended up cold and very windy. Tomorrow is supposed to be very cold. Can we just get some snow?? I would love a big fat blizzard. I am ready for some sledding, some tromping through the snow. I love the way my neighborhood looks in the snow. A couple times I have walked from my friend Lynne’s house down the street back up to my house, right in the middle of the road with my big Golden Retriever running here and there- total white out. Loving every minute of it. There are things about winter that are just so cool.

So back to this crazy wind storm we had today. I was convinced we would lose power. Because we always do. But it held on. What didn’t hold on is our old coyote dog. Somehow he ended up in one of our deep window wells for our basement. I heard him barking when I went down to the basement. Then saw him in the window. He was stuck.

Thank goodness Aimee was here. Not only did she rescue me with a mid afternoon Starbucks but she helped me lug my geriatric dog out of the well. He was scared, and had puked. I don’t know how long he had been in there- the dogs had only been outside for about an hour. Needless to say he was very happy to get out.

I need book ideas.

Last night I finished reading the latest Jodi Picoult (which was ok, but it broke one of my rules) and now I need a new book. Anyone have a suggestion? Remember my rules- no cancer, no children dieing, no depression. It seems like such a common theme in books these days- women (or sisters) are good friends or reunite after a long time, only to find out one of them has cancer and is dieing. Seriously getting old. So…. if you have any funny books, give me a heads up. And if you told me before, tell me again. In the meantime I think I will read Austin’s book he just finished called The Hunger Games. I have heard it is good.

UPS man has been at my door every day. I am doing all of my shopping online and it has been very cool. Of course when you do your shopping online, it is also easy to slip in some stuff for yourself. For instance, a Dyson has arrived, along with a vintage looking mailbox. The UPS man also brought a shipment from Amy Butler as well

Garden Maze Tan

Happy Dots Linen

Garden Maze Red

Fountains Fucshia

Mosaic Rose

Some serious fun.

    Book suggestions –
I have really enjoyed reading Kristen Billerbeck. Her books are lighthearted, “Chic-Lit”, without the drama of death, cancer, etc. (Specifically the Spa Girls trilogy and Ashley Stockingdale trilogy).

Oh, yes, I almost forgot –
I am also LOVING Siri Mitchell. Specifically Kissing Adrien and The Cubicle Next Door

I just finished Dedication by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus. They also wrote the Nanny Diaries but I never read those. Anyway, it was a fun book with none of the things on your list.

One of my all time favorite books is Stiff by Mary Roach. Everyone who I’ve recommended it to, can’t believe a book about cadavers is any good, and EVERY. SINGLE. one of them has loved it. It’s funny good! My sister recommended Kurt Warner’s book, that’s the next on my list. I recently read Galway Bay, a very thick read about the Potato Famine and the Irish families that came to America. I really enjoyed it. Kite Runner is another good one. I could go on and on. A book I tried to read and hated was Eat, Pray, Love. Couldn’t finish and am going to give it to Goodwill. 🙂

It’s not funny but one of the best books going around these days is The Help. It’s going to be my next book club selection. Also, Sarah Addison Allen has a new one coming out soon. She’s the author of Garden Spells. For suspense and excitement, try Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol. It’s very good.

If you want suspense – I got totally pulled into these: The Likeness, Shadow of the Wind, The Thirteenth Tale and Beat the Reaper.(let me know if you need author names) All are extremely well-written, riveting reads – the kind where you suddenly find time to squeeze in pages – check ’em out. I, too, enjoyed The Help.

I love ordering online. I do love going to the mall but not during holiday season. Your gonna love your Dyson…THEY’RE THE BEST!!! BTW, how do you feel about Amy Butlers new Love line? I love her fabrics ,but kind of disappointed by it. Thought it would be more warmer darker colors(brown, tan, plums, grey) for Fall/Winter. I like it for Spring/Summer bags though will have to order some for 2010 summer. Have a great day!

You’ve already received some good book ideas – read “The Thirteenth Tale”, “Shadow of the Wind” and “The Help” and loved them. If you want some fun, light reading, try Emily Giffin’s books – she has four out and it’s good to read them in order as they are related: “Something Borrowed”, “Something Blue”, “Baby Proof” and “Love the One You’re With”. Another suspense that is good is “The Historian” by Elizabeth Kostova.
Hope you find something to read!

Oh that fabric, that fabric!! I love it!

I hope your snow comes today. I always love how bright the house feels when there is snow outside. It hasn’t snowed here yet, and I’m sooo glad. I’m hoping it holds off until the moving trucks come on Wednesday.

I’m with you on the whole book thing. Since I’ve had kids I’ve had to be so careful what I read. I can’t handle that kind of drama anymore. I don’t know if this is what you had in mind, but I just finished the most delightful book ever. Written by Peter Mayle, called A Year in Provence. I loved it!

Hi Elisa, I’m coming out of lurker stage today (not sure why). Love your blog! My book group just picked The Thirteenth Tale and I see others have suggested it, so it must be pretty good! Happy Holidays!!

We just did get a big snow storm. Loved it! The quietness of the snow falling, playing outside with the girls, hot chocolate and a good Christmas movie. It was a great day.

Good books, The Time Travelers Wife, The Glass Castle. A good suspense one is Shutter Island, it’s slow at the beginning but is really good. A Thousand Splendid Suns (same author as the Kite Runner). Water for Elephants.

    Happy Reading.

    Sara

Austin (and Kathy) join me in telling you to read “The Hunger Games” and “Catching Fire.” We are eager for book #3 of the set, due out next year. I made notes myself of some of the suggested books. Let us know what you try.
And I really like that purple fabric you have now.

Hi Elisa. I’m still enjoying your blog!!! Some good books that I have read recently … “The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes” by Diane Chamberlain, The Sookie Stackhouse (vampire) books by Charlaine Harris are fun, “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Pie Peel Society” was wonderful, and Firefly Lane was a fun, carefree read. You should join GoodReads.com — its a pretty cool website where you track the books you have read, and see what your friends (and others) are reading. If you join, be sure to look me up! — Tricia (in Granville).

i know i’m late to the game but re: books… i LOVED The Hunger Games but it totally breaks your rule of no kids dying. that is um, well, pretty much the whole book. BUT… it is a fantastic book and totally worth reading, as is the 2nd book Catching Fire.

    are you on goodreads?

it was good to see you at the gym, even if only for a minute! 🙂
