Yesterday my friend Mikie took me out to lunch for my birthday.  I finally got to try NorthStar in my old hood.  I had the brown rice and beet veggie burger with sweet potato fries.  Yum.

After that we hit SoBo Style which is the kid of store every girl dreams of having.

They had lots of furniture covered in Amy Butler fabric- so much cool stuff.

Here are a few shot with my iphone

I really need this chair, and if you live in the area- do not go buy it!  It’s mine!  I am thinking it might be a good late b-day present to myself.  I would go get it today but Cole is home sick with the crud.

And wouldn’t this be sooo cute in Eva’s room?  It has a drawer under the bench

They had a lot of little bench chair thingies

SoBo Style I think Cole needs this book, but he needs no convincing- which reminds me, did you see the article about germaphobes not living as long as other people?  My husband told me about it.  See, we could all learn a little from my non-hand washing little friend.

SoBo Style Walking into that store made me want to get rid of everything in my house and start over.

But, then I tried to open the drawers on this chest and of course they were lopsided and didn’t slide and all I could think of was my husband in Eva’s room trying to get some pj’s or something out for her and getting really mad that the drawers suck.  Because that is exactly what would happen. And next thing you know, I would come home and find it at the curb waiting for the guy that comes through on trash day to score discarded items.

So, changing the subject- here is a question for you.  When you think of your fave blogs- what is it that draws you to them?  Is the photography, is it the writing?  I used to have a huge blog list and recently it has gone to less than 5.  I’m not sure why except that as my interests change, so do my blogs.

Photography is the biggest thing that draws me to a blog.  I like inspiration.  Especially home inspiration. Not really into all of the design blogs- or the blogs that show a lot of pics from magazines.  I like real life homes, life with kids and pets.  The day to day house- not the perfectly decorated house.

I used to love the scrapbooking blogs.  But when I stopped scrapping 5 years ago, I sorta stopped reading those blogs too.

When we were thinking of adopting it was adoption blogs. So much inspiration from people with very big hearts.  There are still a few I will check in on- people that I connected with personally, but for the most part I don’t really read that many anymore.

Recently a friend of mine sent me some blogs of runners.  I have to admit I am intimidated by that one.  I am not a runner.  I love to exercise but I am not hardcore.  I have rules.  Like no early mornings.  I guess that is my only rule.  No early mornings.  I will never get up at the crack of dawn to run.  Never.  Because I love to sleep more than I love to exercise.  Now I could spend all day at the gym (you know- as long as I didn’t have to go until like 9am or so), as long as I have an ipod full of good tunes.  But the other day I spent 2 hours there- because I had time to kill before picking up Cole.  And the next day I had a lot of trouble walking.  I was so sore!  So probably not the best idea.  And as much as I like to exercise I am still horribly out of shape.  My diet needs an overhaul.  Gone are the days when I could eat anything and everything, but for some reason I still do.  Gone are the days when I could skip a meal and be skinny again.  Sigh.  Ok back to blogs.

Yesterday I went to a blog that I had bookmarked and hadn’t read in a couple weeks.  I originally bookmarked this blog because of home inspiration and life with a lot of kiddos.  But constant judgment of others is making me delete it from my list.  If you run out of topics to discuss, don’t blog anymore.  Don’t slam others for their lifestyle choices- yours is not always better, even if YOU think it is.  Because it gets old.  And off the list you go.

So what about you, what kind of blogs do you like?

I am so with Sally. Your the first blog I read when I get up. Kind of stalker creepy uh? lol but seriously, your so REAL Elisa. You don’t try to come off as being this perfect mom/wife with a perfect neat house. You share your feelings. When your sad, when you cry and when your happy. Also,I have 3 boys too(sigh,NO GIRL 🙁 so envious of you and that lil stinker) so I can relate to alot of what you deal with. AND I too love you house!!!!!!!!!!! And if you ever decide to get rid of anything in your house you’d better put it on Graiglist, I will pay for shipping 🙂 b/c I love your style! I just love to read what goes on your your day to day life. So please don’t ever stop blogging!

I agree with the ladies above this text. 🙂 I tend to follow blogs of people I care about as it makes me still feel connected. I love the photography component and wish I could get there but I clearly need to take a class 🙂

Oh and those crunchy dinners you mentioned yesterday? I laughed out loud and then watched Jack eat an entire bag of goldfish when he got home from school – we still got it going on!!

Ditto. I’ve been reading your blog for over 2 years and I love getting a glimpse of your world! So many blogs give a false view of life, never mentioning the bad days.

I think I tend toward blogs that have a little bit of everything – family, photography, fashion, decorating.

Also, my son and Cole are two peas in a pod when it comes to dirt!

Ah, that’s a good question. I tend to be pulled into blogs that are by people who update. That’s one of the major things I look for. Most of the blogs on my short list now are by friends or family we don’t live close to. Other than that I have a few (yours included) that I found when I first started blogging so those are special in a way I can’t understand. I have deleted quite a few lately that have turned negative, I decided I don’t have room in my life for that kind of energy.
I also like reading blogs about just life in general. I tend to read people with similar interests: knitting, kids, books, teaching, sewing, crafting. In the past I have been bad about commenting, but I have been trying to overcome that and be better.

I have to admit I still love to check out adoption related blogs, though I have narrowed down my list as well. Pictures of REAL family life are a big draw for me. I love the fact that with some bloggers you feel a personal connection though you have never actually met. As almost all of the above have written, your blog is a daily must for me ( :

Like everyone else, my blog list has gotten small. I enjoy blogs with good photography, food (recipes), life with kids, etc. Once a blog turns negative or I have bad feelings after reading, it gets deleted – no time for that kind of stuff. Keeping it updated regularly is big for me. I would be interested in the running blogs you heard about, as I am a once-again-starting-to-run gal who needs some inspiration.

I think what draws me in most is the photography of real family life. I love your blog, I also love Meg Duerksen and Karen Russell. I also enjoy good writing, I read Julia.typepad. She is a great writer with kids and a real life. Of course yours is always one of the first I read! Since I am teaching myself to sew I am finding new ones that I enjoy. But like friends, sometimes the best are the ones we have known the longest!

I love this furniture!! I agree makes me want to redo my house.
I am with you on the blogs, I go for photography.

I like good photos, down to earth content (that is well written) that also has a point, common interests (I get bored with random silly posts or anything over done/repetitive). I will almost always follow interior design blogs, crafting blogs and any blog with Christian content (probably because all these blogs are pretty optimistic/positive/edifying/inspiring).

I think specifically with your blog, I felt a personal connection because your husband is in the military-as is mine, your little girl is hispanic and so am I, Ohio State, and there is a TX connection…I like that you write from a real perspective too.

I wish I had more time to invest in my personal blog but it is solely for my family since they live in TX and MA-I’m in MN. I also work FT and hope to be PT with the arrival of my second child in June so maybe there will be a small pocket of time that will get thrown into my blog’s development then. Plus, I need a better camera!! 🙂

Right now, your blog is one of my favorites. I love the picture and I love your honestly about everyday life. I used to read a lot of scrapbooker’s blogs. I still read Cathy Z, I love her sense of humor. I love Karen Russell’s too. I took her online photography class last year and loved it so I love looking at her pictures. I still read Ali Edward’s & Tara Whitney, & Stacy Julian too. I too though have deleted many from my favorites. I find it such a time waster.
Ditto though for the above comments. Keep blogging, your blog is great.
Off the subject but have your ever used Blurb to turn your blog into a book? I am working on that right now.

This comment relates to your desire to start scrapbooking again. Did you know that there is a huge Scrapbook Expo right in Columbus next month? Making Memories Scrapbboking Expo or something close to that. I have gobs of pictures, tons of paper & supplies. My problem is making time to do it. I love what you said though about owing it to Eva. I have that same feeling for my kids. We had three and then adopted from China. So many pictures so little time, I feel so overwhelmed.

I love your website and my friend’s website because it is so much fun to see other families that I have so much in common with. I too have three children-3 girls (one of them – one years old next month .) I have three dogs (morkie, and 2 golden retrievers.) I love reading these blogs because I can relate to them. I love looking at photos of families that enjoy each other. It’s fun to get tips about best books to read, and where to buy items that you show on website too. Your websites keep me inspired.
I actually caught the sewing bug, and taught myself how to make burpie cloths for my baby.

I love your blog and a few randoms I have found here and there. the biggest thing for me is updating and photography and house design (cottage living style!). the thing I love about your blog is that you post on more than one thing. I have noticed some blog solely on their kids and it doesn’t really make it super interesting to want to stalk it!

  15. Kathy T | 22nd Jan 10

I have found over time as my blogroll has also gone down that I tend to read blogs of those individuals who I like – who I think that, if I met them at Starbucks, we could be friends. Real people, most of whom make me laugh every once in a while.

Wow. That sounds so majorly stalkerish. Isn’t the internet great!

PS Eva is gorgeous. Such a happy kid. If you ever get tired of her, send her my way…

  16. meg duerksen | 23rd Jan 10

i tend to read blogs of happy moms. 🙂
    with good photography.
and focus on the happy not on their mood or the bad stuff.

    i love photography blogs too.

  17. Jackie | 28th Jan 10

I’m catching up on my blog reading since my computer had died last week, but just had to comment. I’ve been reading your blog for . . . geez. Three years? I don’t even remember and it’s always been a favorite. I love your bags. Love the inspiration you offer from your home remodel. And I will likely be an aunt to an adoptive boy or girl soon, so any time you talk about that process with your little girl it just gets me every time. Regarding blogs, I think it’s honest writing that appeals to me. The idea that what I’m reading matches how I would imagine the writer talking. It needs to be raw and honest; like you know the person. Please keep up the work on your blog–I love it!
