beach - Beach house rebuild

BHI Summer

We spent 5 weeks at Bald Head Island this summer. Off and on. It was weird being there and not being in our own house but also fun and interesting to try new places. That said I am SO ready to have our house again. This is the current state of our house

Yep. it’s gone. Just the crofter remaining there on the right. All that sand was filled with pieces of our life. Broken plates, artwork, furniture…. It was surreal. When I was standing in the middle a family drove up in their cart. I waved because I understand that there have been a lot of lookie-loos which I understand. They asked our names and then told us they had rented our house a couple times and cried when they heard the news as they had such good memories there. That honestly made me smile (while crying). It was a lot, and I am thankful that others loved that house as much as we did.

I started to say Oakley, which I call him all the time, sigh. COSMO did so well on his 2nd time on the ferry. He’s a natural. He just follows the lead of his big bro who is a pro.

We settled into our house and went to pick up our own golf carts (they survived the fire) because I just perfer to use my own. Brought lots of food and made my fave breakfast the next morning.

It was weird having to take a cart to get the dogs over to the beach after dinner. Made me really miss and realize how I took for granted the beach location of our house.

Because the sand gets so hot in the afternoon we only take the dogs in the morning and evening. Cosmo took full advantage and rolled and rolled. Once again made me appreciate that we could have just walked to our house and jumped in the outdoor shower vs a sandy wet cart ride home with this little stinker.

My sweet old man Hudson played a lot and felt it later

Eva wanted to go look at the stars so we stopped on the wooden bridge and she grabbed this shot

And Andy took this one

Andy and Eva decided to take kayaks out on the marsh the next morning

Always waiting nearby when I’m making dinner

Our friend Carmen had us over for dinner. I am so very thankful for her friendship- from the fact that she was the one that called me at the crack of dawn to tell me about our house burning down, to being on the board and helping speed up our rebuild process, but most of all her love for my sweet girl.

After 2 weeks we headed back to Chapel Hill for a week

And then it was back for another couple of weeks

Hanging with our friends that also have a Golden 🙂 Kim’s dog looking at her like “are you ok??”

Beach hair don’t care

I became obsessed with this dip I found at the market. It was $15 for a small tub so I decided to make my own. Recipe coming soon. It turned out so good!!! I had to borrow a friends food processor because the house had nothing that would work to mix stuff. Ugh, once again was missing my house! Mental note- add food processor to list of things to replace, it’s prob in pieces in that sand dune.

We were beach front at this house but you couldn’t see the ocean, just the dune. So I watched a lot of pelicans

Took the dogs on a long walk around the island and they pooped out halfway through so I had to call the dog uber

I waved goodbye and continued my walk. Meanwhile always waiting for his bowl to be filled. We had to use a casserole dish for water because he likes to pick up water bowls and carry them around

Andy had to go back to CH to pick up a work laptop so Eva and I took the opportunity to have a very early dinner at Jailhouse

One nice thing about this house being ocean front was evening sunsets and early morning walks on the beach

Trouble maker

Our old neighbors came in from Ohio, it was good to see them again

And my typical BHI shots 🙂

We went back to Chapel Hill for a week again and then headed back for our final visit before school starts

Back in the forest but this house has a fenced yard which makes it super easy for the dogs when Cosmo gets up at 5am

Always at my feet when making dinner. We were lucky to get the Chapel Hill kids and the Cleveland kids in for this trip. We just missed Cole who was buys in Boone.

Missed seeing a bunch of shoes at the door. And while I don’t really miss almost making it to the dishwasher it did make me laugh…

The Chapel Hill kids couldn’t stay long but we got the Ohio kids for the week

I wish I had pulled out my big camera but I didn’t. Not once. I miss it like crazy but also just trying to be more present. I didn’t even take very many iphone pics. I do know that the very long break I have taken was needed and I am excited to pick it back up again.

I didn’t realize that Austin and Taylor hadn’t really seen the birds at the Overlook so it was fun to see them

Of course they did the turtle trot

And we did get a few of them together 🙂

And of course dogs

And that wraps up Summer at BHI. We hope to break ground on the house in the next few weeks. Stay tuned if you like house content!
