{"id":2813,"date":"2010-02-06T09:12:02","date_gmt":"2010-02-06T14:12:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.elisalou.com\/blog\/?p=2813"},"modified":"2025-04-30T13:15:11","modified_gmt":"2025-04-30T17:15:11","slug":"buying-organic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.elisalou.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/06\/buying-organic\/","title":{"rendered":"Buying organic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For those who have questions about buying organic for a large family, here is what I do.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it can be very expensive, so I tend to pick and choose what I buy organic.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere out there\u00a0 is a list of which fruits and veggies are the most heavily sprayed, I tend to go off that.\u00a0 And also what my kids are willing to eat.<\/p>\n<p>I always buy organic apples because my kids love apples.\u00a0 And because they eat the skin of the apple.\u00a0 Things that have a protective outer cover (like bananas) are not high on my &#8220;buy organic&#8221; list because the outer covering tend to protect the part you eat from the pesticides.\u00a0 I like to buy organic red peppers (my fave veggie) but they are harder to find.<\/p>\n<p>I *always* buy organic milk.\u00a0 If nothing else, you should do this.\u00a0 Esp. if you have girls.<\/p>\n<p>Everything else I kind of pick and choose.\u00a0 If there are two options, I will buy the organic version.\u00a0 And check out your local grocery store.\u00a0 We have a Meijers here and they have there own organic house brand.\u00a0 I buy that A LOT.\u00a0 Everything from milk, to beans (my kids eat a lot of beans- could explains a few things&#8230;.), jelly, chips&#8230;.It&#8217;s cheaper than going to Whole Foods.<\/p>\n<p>I hope that helps- I don&#8217;t want to go on and on about it.\u00a0 We also eat a ton of junk.\u00a0 We tend to be a &#8220;everything in moderation&#8221; kind of family.<\/p>\n<p>And despite some of my best intentions, Cole has declared that the Jiff and white bread he got at a friends house was WAY better than the organic peanut butter and whole wheat bread he gets served at home.\u00a0 So he now refuses peanut butter sandwiches.<\/p>\n<p>But I still try.<\/p>\n<p>As for the coupons and such- I don&#8217;t do them.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t remember to take them or I end up at the store when I have 5 minutes between here and there.\u00a0 I would love to do them, but I found that they are mostly for the heavily processed foods anyway.\u00a0 Plus it wold require organization and I am more fly by the seat of my pants.\u00a0 Unfortunately.<\/p>\n<p>Oh and try Costco if you have one.\u00a0 I find a ton of organic stuff there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For those who have questions about buying organic for a large family, here is what I do.
