Spring Break

Posted in ElisaLou at 8:54 am by elisa

Starts in about 3 hours.  The boys have a half day today and no school tomorrow.  Next week is Spring Break.  We are all ready for a break, especially since the weather has been so nice for the last couple weeks.

The older boys both have lacrosse tonight and I am going to cut and interface as much as I can to haul to the farm with us.  I can only take bags that can be sewn on a regular sewing machine.  Only my industrial will get through the heavy fleece interfacing that we use on the totes and messengers.

Like this one, it is off to teacher but I had to snap a picture because I thought it was so cute, denim on the outside and what’s your number on the inside

This will be Shiloh’s first trip to the farm.  Barley will show her around I’m sure and we can count on them all needing baths before they load back up to come home.

Lot of good critter smells out by the barn.  Because there is a pond out there, Astro always finds plenty of duck poop to roll in.  Fortunately Barley hasn’t picked up this nice habit.

But she does like to roll in the pasture with a couple of boys

Why working from home ROCKS!

Posted in ElisaLou at 1:32 pm by elisa

Because Cole and I can put on some old REM (Dead Letter Office) and dance around the living room floor.  He likes the rockin songs, I like to twirl him around to Femme Fatale and Pale Blue Eyes.

Oh and it’s Friday,

AND my husband is back from Boston.

And it’s warm.

How to make a house a home

Posted in ElisaLou at 2:59 pm by elisa

Cole and I are taking a little afternoon break.  He is writing an essay, he says it is called “what not to do at a stoplight”.  That will sound familiar to those of you who watch Spongebob.

As I was sewing along a few minutes ago I started thinking about how we have been trying for the last three years to make our house our home.  When we bought this house, we had it narrowed down to 2 different houses in two different parts of town.  Both houses were the same price, older colonials, one a little older than the other.  The other house was smaller, only three bedrooms and pretty much needed an instant addtition.  It had already had an addition put on the back that had eaten up most of the yard.  Still, we were pretty sure we were going to put an offer on it.  It was in a part of town that we really thought was our first choice and this house offered us a chance to get our foot in the door of a very nice old neighborhood.  I remember being up late one night (which was probably 8pm or so but felt like midnight to my pregnant body) looking over the pictures of the house we are now in.  The yard was/is perfect.  Extra big with lots of large trees.  The house was so not our style.  Every single room was wrong, stuck in a 60’s time warp.  But as I slowly looked at each picture I could see the possibilities.  I knew the whole house had hardwood floors under all the nasty carpet.  I loved the screened porch and the buillt-ins next to the fireplace.  I loved the large bedrooms with large closets.  The fact that there was a bike trail at the end of the street that winds along a major river was a huge bonus but I had no idea how much at the time.  And the good thing was that it was big enough for us, at least for a while.  It was close to a library, community center, community pool, historic downtown, and elementary school.   I called Andy over and told him that I thought we may need to re-think our choice.  We did, and here we are.  A million little projects later our house is slowly, very very slowly, becoming what we want it to be.  This morning I met with another architect to talk about our ideas.  I am so ready to wrap up the house projects and just enjoy living in a house that is my style, comfortable for all of us, and fun to live in.  I don’t want a big house, I am not a McMansion kind of girl.  But I do insist on charm and character.  And function.  It has to function well.  Nothing bugs me more than rooms that no one uses.  We use every inch of this house, and that’s the way it is supposed to be.  So as we plan out the next phase of our remodeling we move another step closer to this house truly becoming our home.

My 3 year old has a girlfriend

Posted in ElisaLou at 7:27 am by elisa

and her name is Lucy.  He likes to talk about her ALL THE TIME.  Lucy is actually his 14 year old babysitter.  But the age difference doesn’t seem to phase him and he tells everyone he knows all about her.  At first it was cute, but now it is starting to get a little old.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Lucy too but there are other things to talk about.  Yesterday we were driving in the car and a slow song came on and he said, “this is a sad song.  This is a song all about Lucy leaving and never coming back”.  I didn’t really hear that in the song but I wasn’t going to argue with him.  And no, Lucy isn’t gone- she lives a few doors down.  He sees her when she walks by our house on her way home from school, he sees her when she babysits, he sees her at church, he sees ALL THE TIME.  Lucy has a little sister named Scarlett that is actually only 6 months older than Cole.  She is his 2nd girlfriend.  He plans to invite them both to his birthday party this summer.

In other news I was flipping through the March CK magazine this morning while the boys were eating their breakfast.  I don’t get a chance to look through this magazine that much anymore so I went straight to the Ali Edwards article and was happy to see a layout of her with one my bags over her shoulder.  Not a big glimpse but it was there- love that.  Ali has ordered a couple bags so I knew that she had them, it’s just fun to see them in print.

I haven’t scrapbooked in well over a year.  Running a business is so very time consuming that if I have time to do laundry I am lucky.  When our computer crashed recently we learned a big lesson in backing up photos- do it!  Fortunately Andy was able to retrieve them for me.  Big sigh of relief.  Someday I will start printing them out and getting them in books.  Some day.

Shame on Iams

Posted in ElisaLou at 11:37 am by elisa

I decided to google “Iams” today to get more info on the pet food recall this morning and I was shocked with all the websites that popped up about the cruelty that Iams puts dogs and cats through. Shocked. I won’t post links, images of dogs being tortured can really stick with you and wreck your day so I will spare you that. This angers me on so many levels. The main one being the fact that I always try to be buy responsibly- I know that Proctor and Gamble is notorious for their animal testing and so I choose to not give them my money if I don’t have to. I try to only buy “cruelty free” products. It makes me mad that I couldn’t trust that a company with a wholesome reputation like Iams would not be involved in animal testing. I feel duped. I am mad that I have given them so much money over the last 10 plus years. I always thought I was doing a good thing feeding my dogs Iams, well except for the time we found a dead mouse in the bag. Sigh.  Now the recall, all I have to say is what comes around goes around.
So, it’s time for a change. I have been wanting to change anyway because Barley has severe allergies and dog food has so much extra “crap” (for lack of a better word) as fillers. I read in Bark magazine that dogs really need a dog food with simple basic ingredients and if you choose a food that limits it’s ingredients to only whole foods that they need, they have less allergies, their temperments are better, and they are healthier. Hmm sounds just like what they say about kids. California Natural seemed to have what we need so we are going to give it a try. Adios Iams.

Ok, moving on. It’s thundering outside and the rain is coming down. All dogs are curled into tight balls sleeping. A perfect day to sew. And speaking of sewing, we are featured on Quilter’s Buzz again. Thanks Gina!

Freeze Frame

Posted in Life at 7:28 am by elisa

Do you ever want to freeze time?  The sweet 3 year old face, the Lands End rain coat and boots that has made it through three boys (love their stuff).  The Lil’ Cowpoke Pj’s made by me that are getting too small.  Being small enough to think that the backyard is a wonderland waiting to be explored.

choices

Posted in ElisaLou at 8:02 am by elisa

Yesterday I had a remodeling company come out to talk to me about adding on to our house.  We have been living in limbo for so long- should we add on, should be move. where can I have a studio, should I just get a storefront?  This is the 2nd company we have had over to talk about an addition.  I don’t want a big house, I prefer character over size.  But the reality is we are a family of 5 and my goal is to make this house function better for us.  There are things I don’t want to give up, like my screened in porch.  I have found that this is my favorite room of the house when the weather is warm.  I don’t know how I ever lived without one.  Now that the weather has warmed up my friends and I have been hanging out there a lot watching the kiddos play in the backyard.  I am looking more at tweeking what we have, and adding a small family room in the back but of course the ideal space for the family room is where my screened porch now sits.  So that means a new family room plus a new screend porch…ugh.

Then there is the studio question.  We have been tossing around the idea of opening a store in Old Worthington.  It would be nice to walk to work.  My kids school is within walking distance too.  It’s tempting, it would solve some problems and I would have space for people to come in and sew and cut.  The best thing is that I could walk away from it at the end of the day instead of having it always there.

But on the flip side, I enjoy working from home.  I like to step outside and breathe fresh air every now and then.  I like to watch MTV while I sew.  I like the freedom.

And then there is this

what better way to spend your breaks than doing this?

And watching the puppies play?
