How to use a Speedlight

Just kidding, I have no idea what I am doing.

But I did recently buy a speedlight for my birthday. Yes, I am all about natural photography and all that but this dreary Ohio winter is making me crazy. That combined with a camera that needs good light to focus quickly…..

So like I said, I have no idea what I am doing. I didn’t want the flash to hit my subjects- I haven’t gone that far to the other side, but I did want it to light up the room enough to allow my camera to focus better.

I took these pictures in the kids bathroom, bouncing the light off the ceiling (which is white) and the wall behind me (which is white). Very important to bounce off a white wall or else your pictures will take on a glow of whatever color wall you are bouncing off. I don’t know, might be kinda cool- who knows.

The tricky thing is to figure out correct exposure- mine are overexposed

But I still like the way they look- and was very happy with the focus

Yesterday I cleaned up my basement after having a bajillion kids trash it Friday night. I love the basement when it is clean. I got out all the old scrapbooks and pics to get those organized as well. I’m actually excited to take on that project. Something about the new year always makes me want to document things again. Remember last year?

So speaking of scrapbooking, tomorrow I will show you my Project Life book. Remember that? If anyone else did that project, leave a link- would love to see how you tackled it.

Enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday! Andy has to work, evaluating commercials or something like that. And then do a press release after it’s all over. So late night for him I am guessing. The kiddos and I are headed to a party- well if I get motivated.

  1. Those are very cool. I have never even attempted a speed light. I am SO over the winter, I just want a little spring. Where is our February thaw? I think you did great with the speed light and have some VERY VERY cute models 🙂

  2. Your pics are amazing. I wouldn’t have thought they look overexposed – but I’m still learning. I have no idea what Speed light is, but I might need one! Most days around Seattle are gray. Looking forward to seeing more of your experiments with it.

  3. New to your blog and love what you love! Your children are so sweet! Looking back at your farmhouse archives and that farmhouse with the lake/pond with the stables…oh my!! I love it!! Do you remember how much it was going for? Just wondering!!

Thanks for sharing all the fun stuff, Jen
