I guess Mother Nature thought we might need a little example of what we will soon encounter when we head down to the Lone Star State. 90 degree temps just aren’t all that common up here and yet here it is May and the temp outside is, well, 90. I actually don’t mind although Andy did tell me as he walking out the door today, “you might want to turn the a/c on today.” Wimp. I lived in a house in Austin with no a/c for two years. 110 degrees and no air! I have to admit it really sucked. But I hate closing the windows. Hate it. So on goes the attic fan and the dogs can just go lay under a tree. I do admit to getting a little irritable when they (the dogs) breathe on me or the boys hang on me. Too hot for that. Good thing I cut off all my hair last night. I showed my hairdresser a picture I saw on a photography blog and said please do this and she did. Much much better. (it’s the picture of woman on the side that says “blog”). Of course it required thinning my hair up, which I LOVE to have done. I have way too much hair.
Off to sew. It’s downright cool in the basement!

Whew, I’m pooped after this long weekend. Too many activities.
Austin had a pool party with his LAX team

Yesterday we walked over to downtown for the Memorial Day Parade.

A couple of cook-outs and a tired family.
Tonight I am going to get my hair cut and highlighted. Can’t wait. I asked Andy if I should cut my hair short and this is how our conversation went.
E- Should I get my hair cut short, or keep trying to grow it long?
A- Cut it short
E- You like it better short?
A- I like it both ways.
E- Well which do you like better?
A- Which way do YOU like better?
E- I don’t know, that’s why I am asking you
A-It doesn’t matter to me
E- well do you like it long?
A- yes
E- so why do you want me to cut it?
A- Because I like it short too
E- Which do you like better??
A- I like whatever way will make you not complain about it.
silence.
Hmm I didn’t think I really complained about it all that much.

It has begun. It started earlier this week with the end of preschool for Cole. For this year anyway. A party that included a picnic on the Village Green with hotdogs, face painting, flower planting, and ending up with singing in the chapel.

Cole’s little buddy looked pretty cute in his hat

Both boys were a little grumpy, it was hot and they were tired. It’s hard being three and four.
For Mother’s Day I got a small digital camera that has become a life saver. I often didn’t want to haul around my big digital rebel so this tiny camera saves the day. It fits in my pocket.
My boys have loved photography forever and they love to take picture with the small camera. Much easier for smaller hands. Blake took this one of Austin and I on the hammock.

I am hoping it’s an optical illusion and that my thighs really aren’t that big but just in case I am skipping lunch today.
Austin took this picture of his crazy dog

Love it. She looks like mad dog. Like mad crazy. See our old dog Astro, all he has to do is raise his lip, doesn’t have to make a peep, and she hightails it in the other direction. He is so old. We found him on the streets of Austin when he was about 8 months old and he has been such a good dog, we think he is half coyote. My neighbors are amazed at how agile he still is, we think one day he will just drop.
Speaking of dogs, my dogs have been doing crazy things lately. Yesterday out contractor came out to stake off where the addition is to go and we laughed about how the little pink flags wouldn’t last more than 5 minutes with Cole around. But it wasn’t Cole. It was Shiloh that pulled them all out of the ground. Then Austin informed me that Barley, our huge Golden has been laying in the hammock. I have yet to see it, how she gets in there without tipping and landing on her head….I hope I have my camera nearby.
June is a crazy month for us but I absolutely love it. End of the school year, Supergames, end of the year parties, and 3, count em’ THREE birthdays for three little boys I know and love. First one is the middle child, 2nd one is the baby, and the third is 1st. Confused? I am so excited because this year Austin is turning 10. Ten is such a great age and such a big big birthday. I was SOOO excited when I turned 10. Double Digits!. AND, in honor of his tenth birthday- Austin is going to get to celebrate it in Austin! He has been wanting to check out the city that he was named after for a long time. The last time he was there was before we had Cole so it has been a while. We didn’t think we were going to be able to make “cousin camp” this year. Andy is so busy at work he just didn’t think he could take a week off at this point but the more we thought about it, the more we realized that we all needed a break. SO we are off to Texas for a week at the beach with my two sister-in-laws and their families and my mother and father in-law, with a few days in Austin tacked onto the end.
And here are the sites we plan to see with the birthday boy
Chuys, the place were Andy and I worked while in college and where we met.
Trudys, more good tex-mex food. We ate countless black bean tacos there.
Mt Bonnell- where Andy proposed to me
Barton Springs- we got our old Lab Bailey (now deceased) in the parking lot of Barton Springs. A man and woman were giving them away out of the back of their station wagon.
Congress Ave Bats- ok this sounds really creepy but it is actually very very cool. People bring picnics every night to sit on the shore of the Colorado River to watch the bats fly out from under the Congress bridge. They all come out at once and it is amazing. The boys are going to LOVE this.
Lake Travis- spent many hours swimming in this lake
Hula Hut- one of the many cool places to eat on the lake
University of Texas- where Andy and I went to school and where Austin says he will wear a Buckeye shirt when he visits
And if we ever go and have the time…..
tubing- in San Marcos, so much fun
River Walk- San Antonio is probably one of the biggest under-rated cities. It is so pretty there.
Have a great weekend!

Check out the ready made section of the website, it is slowly growing- one bag at a time. Added this one today, along with a large bucket, boxy tote, and a Lily. As time permits we will be adding more and more to this section of the site.

Also added today was this

Love love love this necklace. I made one for me and I wear it all the time. Goes really well with my standard white t-shirt uniform. Love the Hill Tribe Silver.
Another fun one that was added is this bracelet

Another favorite with jeans and white t-shirt. These jewel tone pearls are elegant and simple. Love that.
And to round it off can’t forget the ears

Oh and I keep getting asked about the Bailey bag, watch your inbox for a newsletter soon…….

The boys have officially wrapped up sports for the year. LAX and soccer came to an end this weekend and we are taking the summer off. No baseball for the first time in 4 years. I can’t wait. This means more relaxed evenings, trips to the pool with dad, more spontaneous trips to the farm. The kind of summer that was the norm when I was a kid. No schedules, no games, just time for play and reading books in the hammock. More time spend together, less time spent at individual activities. As my kids are getting older I am becoming more and more aware of how fast time can turn into a blur of social and sporting events with me trying to just get us from here to there and not taking anything in. I need to get to know my kids again.
So that is the plan. Yes I know they will fight, and I know I will be pulling my hair out half the time but I also know that we have lost touch with how to all be together and just have fun. SO that is the plan, wish me luck!
Here are some pictures from the last games

I stumbled on a few old pictures and actually made a couple of pages. The first picture was taken when we lived in California and went up to the mountains for a day of sledding. I was probably three at the time.

As you can see I was/am a very simple scrapper!
I do think it is very important to get your memories down for your future generations, whether it’s in a journal or like my father-in-law with a little tape recorder. Unfortunately I just don’t do it any more. I keep telling myself I will, but time is always my enemy.
The other page I pulled out recently was this one

My oldest son is very curious about war lately. He has checked out two books from the library about Vietnam and did a book report on one of them. He asks me a lot of questions about what it was like to be a Marine and be in Vietnam- my dad was there twice. I don’t know the answers to his questions. We never talked about it when I was growing up. Austin says he read that the soldiers were told to never talk about it. I guess he read that in one of his books. I know he doesn’t want gory details, I think he just wants to know what life was like. What they ate, where they slept, did they ride in tanks? That sort of thing.
Kids have questions and are curious about our lives and I love the fact that there are so many ways to record and remember our histories. It’s just a matter of doing it!

Even though things can be crazy, 3 different birthday parties, 1 soccer game, two lacrosse games…… it is my favorite time of the week. Lots and lots of outside time.
SO my little guy says, will you take my picture? And then he strikes a pose.

And starts to dance

Then gets a little serious

Look at these feet

And then he says, can I take your picture? And takes this.

And then it’s time for a bath.
Oh and see that shirt he is wearing? It was mine, and he LOVES that he can wear a shirt that I wore as a kid. We found it at my parents house recently and he was soooo excited. Anyone else grow up in NC and remember that little jingle? “I like calling North Carolina Home.”

Today Blake came home from school and said, “I have an early Mother’s Day present for you.” He gives me a poem that says
It’s almost Mother’s Day.
I want to show my mom I love her in a special way.
I’ll paint a box.
I’ll put in a teddy bear.
It shows how we love to bear hug.
I’ll put in a piece of gum.
It shows how we always stick together.
I’ll put in some nuts.
They show how silly we like to be.
I’ll put in a bandage.
It shows how she always comes to my rescue.
I’ll put in a chocolate kiss.
It shows how good it feels to be loved.
And Mom, don’t forget……
I’ll love you forever!
SO then he hands me a little painted box with a teddy bear in it, a piece of gum, a peanut, a band-aid, and a chocolate kiss. I told him it was very sweet and he said, “can I have the piece the gum?” so I give it to him. Then he says, “can I have the peanut too? I really like peanuts.”
I gave him the peanut, and then said, “do you want the Hershey’s Kiss too?” He nodded and said, “but you can have the band-aid.”
Thanks.
